Lunch with cousins
Saturday was a clear and sunny day (well in the morning anyway) in Belfast. I did some packing and then caught a taxi out to Dundonald to have lunch with cousins Bill and Rosemary. Bill is my second cousin as his paternal grandfather and mine were brothers. We met by email many years ago having been introduced by another second cousin who lives in America. Rosemary, his wife, is related to me on my mother’s side but we haven’t as yet worked out the relationship. This discovery came about a couple of years ago when Bill and Rosemary had their DNA done through FTDNA.
Bill and Rosemary live in a lovely bungalow with great views across the countryside but in the years I have been visiting them, you can see the paddocks slowly disappearing with new housing estates being built.
Bill and Rosemary took me to lunch at the Old Inn in Crawfordsburn, Bangor, a delightful place. Kirby and I had been there before with them 12 months ago and thought the meals were excellent.
It is a restaurant and hotel and very popular, especially on weekends. Once again, it didn’t disappoint and the smallest two restaurants were packed. The first image is of the function room which is mainly used for weddings and dinner at night. There are blue plaques on the inside and outside walls advising that CS Lewis had his honeymoon here!
BUT, that wasn’t the only excitement of the day! Rosemary and I were standing outside the main entrance waiting for Bill when a car drove along the road, and veered onto the other side, straight into the pub hitting outside the very window we had been sitting next to for lunch. It all seemed to happen in slow motion and thankfully she wasn’t speeding but we were pleased that we weren’t still in the restaurant as I imagine those still in there would have had a bit of a scare.
We meandered home to Bill and Rosemary’s, spending the next few hours chatting. They then drove me back to the apartment, and by now there was a drizzle of rain. I am not sure when I will get back to Belfast again and it will be a shame as I love catching up with Bill and Rosemary.
